A few weeks ago, I was contacted by Eric Hellman, the man behind a very interesting and noble effort in freeing creative expression from the bounds of copyright. His project, Unglue.It, is a website where authors can post “unglued” ebooks–that is, ebooks that have been released under Creative Commons licenses. Just as important, it’s a way to convince authors to “unglue” works still held under copyright. From the site’s FAQ:
In a Pledge Campaign, book lovers pledge their support for ungluing a book. If enough support is found to reach the goal (and only then), the supporter’s credit cards are charged, and an unglued ebook is released.
In a Buy-to-Unglue Campaign, every ebook copy sold moves the book’s ungluing date closer to the present. And you can donate ebooks to your local library- that’s something you can’t do in the Kindle or Apple Stores!
In a Thanks-for-Ungluing Campaign, the ebook is already released with a Creative Commons license. Supporters can express their thanks by paying what they wish for the license and the ebook.
We are pleased to be able to offer House of Refuge and Population of Loss on Unglue.It. They, and all other Ascension Epoch content, have been released under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license since the beginning, but due to our KDP-Select exclusivity agreement, we were not able to release them on other sites. Since KDP Select wasn’t really bringing us any extra exposure for these titles, and are long-term goal was to make Population of Loss and House of Refuge available for free as a promotional consideration anyway, we let our KDP Select agreement for these titles lapse at the end of March. Now, you can get both titles on Unglue.It, in addition to NoiseTrade, which I blogged about last week. This also makes the books available in .epub and .PDF formats for the first time.
